Make Shelves out of Window Shutters

The shelves here are made of recycled "exterior wood window shutters". They were scrubbed using a metal bbq brush and liquid Vim, sun dried for fast drying, then sanded prior to painting

The 2 side pieces used, measure 5 feet in height and made for a perfect usable shelving unit!
TIPs: Close up the shutters (if open) with glue, to make sure they don't open in the future. Once glued closed, you'll notice that one side is smoother than the other and has a ridge. The smoother side will be the upper side, leaving the bumpy side underneath where less dust is collected.
By painting the pieces before putting it together you can touch up any areas damaged by screws or other. Don't paint the sides to be glued. It's harder to paint when it'sl put together under the shelving tiers, in nooks and crannies.

Piece Together

Place side pieces up against a wall. This keeps it sturdy and helps to measure the distance between each shelf. Use 4 screws per side after glue is in place, so that everything holds fast.

If you're using the optional "L" shaped metal under brackets for stability, then now's the time to screw them in place.

Once all your shelves have been glued and screwed into place, stand the shelf up. Varnish if you wish in a velocity of choice. (matt, semi gloss or high gloss finish)

Carpenter's Glue, Wood Filler, Wood Glue, Sandpaper, Bread Knife, Scraper or Putty Knife.

Paint Color of Choice - preferably Acrylic for durability - approx one pint/quart ** do you have any odds and end leftover paints? possibly even exterior paint? if so, use it, especially the exterior paint. it'll last longer.

Space to lay the pieces on the floor for assembly and putting together.
